Playing With Us

Main Season

The main club season runs from the start of September to the end of April each year.

2024-25 season: 3rd Sep 2024 to 31st Apr 2025

If you get a club membership for the main season, these sessions are free to attend. Club membership also comes with BE membership for the year, which provides various perks including discounted rates at Central Badminton and early access to buy tickets for the Yonex All England Championship each year.

Club nights are social sessions on 4 courts, with between 16 and 24 players typically joining.

These take place every Tuesday 20:00 - 22:00 at Headington Rye during the main season.

Often followed by a quick visit to the White Horse for a drink and a catch-up.

Visitors are welcome to sign up at £9 per session. Use the link below to book a spot as a visitor through the Playwaze system.

Due to Badminton England insurance restrictions, visitors may only join for 6 sessions total each year.

Players must be over 18 years old and of at least an intermediate competitive standard. We do not offer regular coaching, though from time to time we organise short series of coaching sessions.

If you are unsure if you are at the right standard, come along and try a visitor session!

Summer Club

We run a separate Summer Membership at Brookes Sport from May to August. Summer Membership can be purchased for £80 or individual sessions are £9, also booked through Playwaze.

2025 Summer season: Tuesdays, 20:00 - 22:00, 20th May to 26th August

Where: Brookes Sport - Oxford Brookes University Centre for Sport, Cheney Lane, Headington, Oxford, OX3 0GB

Parking at Brookes: see info on their website . You can park for free on Cheney Lane, but it's not always possible to find a space.

Summer members must also be BE members. If you have not already got BE membership, get in touch to ask how.

Finding the Hall at Headington Rye

From Headley Way
If you enter from Headley Way, turn left and drive over the flow control devices on the left. Follow the path parallel with Headley Way, then right to the front of the main school building, after which you reach the first parking spaces, next to the astroturf. Take a left through those spaces and a right to drive past the astroturf and more parking spaces, parallel with Headington Road. Depending how full the car park is, you may choose one of these spaces next to the astroturf or continue through to the final section of spaces. Finally, take the diagonal path out of the back right corner of that section of spaces, walk past the swimming pool and bike racks. Once past the next corner, you will have a Male changing room (locked) on your left and the double doors to the hall ahead of you, with keypads to the right. When you leave by car, trace the same path back, but do not drive back over the flow control device now on your right, instead approach the parking barrier to the left and it will lift.
If you enter from Headington Road, follow the road ahead and then round to the left. The first opportunity to park will be spaces to your left opposite an entrance to the sports complex (which we cannot use). If there is no space here, the next opportunity is to follow the path further and find the diagonal spaces on the left, opposite the tennis/netball courts. This path is one way, so when you leave at the end of the night, you must continue further round with a left/right/left to find the exit. Once parked, you will need to start walking between the tennis/netball courts and the sports complex, turn right and follow the edge of the building beyond the courts, keep going past the first fire doors of the sports hall, turn right at the corner of the sports hall, past another set of fire doors. You will be able to see the Male changing room (locked, not for our use) ahead of you, you will reach the double doors which we access the hall by on your right, with keypads to the right.

Socials and Communications

We try to get the club together off court as often as we can, with pub, park, food, game and event based socials.

All members and visitors are welcome (and encouraged) to join any socials - don't hesitate to ask the Social Secretatry what's coming up!

Members of the club will be added to the club WhatsApp community. You will also need to fill out a short form of contact details when you first join.

WhatsApp is our main means of communication - check the Announcements channel for important information.

Club Ethos

Oxford Badminton Club is a strictly inclusive club and will not tolerate any discrimination or mistreatment at our club nights, matches or socials.

If you would like any support or discuss an issue, please contact our Welfare Officer (or any member of the committee if you prefer).

At the bottom of this page you will find our full written policies.

We are all aiming to enjoy and improve our game, as well as keep healthy and make friends. To keep the club enjoyable for all members, we need to ensure there is not too big of a gap in standard between the strongest and weakest players, which does mean that the club won't be right for everyone to play at. If the committee feels that as a visitor you aren't at a level that keeps club nights competitive, we will let you know and suggest a variety of other places locally you can play and train. Please do not take this as a personal slight, we just want everyone to have fun!
